The most useful of the Buddhism beliefs
One of the Buddhism beliefs that I have found most useful is this saying attributed to the Zen Master Bodhidharma:
“This very mind the Buddha”
If we accept this as true then what are the implications of these Buddhism beliefs to the way we live our lives?
Simply this: be as polite respectful and reverent to the antics of the mind – the jumble of thoughts, emotions, feelings and complexes – as you would to the Buddha himself.
This is one of the most useful and important meditation tips that anybody can teach you.
About meditation and depression also – this technique, if applied in your day to day life, will transform your inner and outer worlds.
Try it. It works. I am speaking from experience. It has worked for me, it will work for you. You will be happier and at peace with yourself; you will experience the benefits of meditation and mindfulness yourself.
I know I am asking you to make a radical transformation in your life. Generally all of us are judgmental, prone to hating ourselves and others, dissatisfied, angry, complaining and the like.
These are our habitual mental reactions. I call them conditioned reflexes. I am asking you to witness and dis-identify from these conditioned reflexes and to choose a different response to the world and to the antics of the mind.
And I am asking you to keep right on doing this moment after moment fro the rest of your life.
Of course you will forget and slip back into your habitual reactions. That is only to be expected. These are the habits of a lifetime that we are attempting to change.
Every time you remember simply choose the new response of being polite and respectful.
This, as I said earlier, will bring about a radical transformation in your inner and outer lives.
And don’t worry. It will get easier. As you learn this new skill, as you grow comfortable with it, you will find yourself doing this habitually.
As to benefits you will be happier and more peaceful; more at ease with yourself and with the world. But it will also dramatically transform your social life, your family life, your career – the entire gamut of your interpersonal relationships.
How does this follow? You may remember this quotation of Shakespeare:
“To thine own self be true and then it follows as the night the day that thou cannot then be false to any man”
As you treat yourself – so you will treat others. You will find yourself easily and naturally being polite and respectful to others. It will become a part of your being.
So this is one of the Buddhism beliefs which, if put into practice, will completely transform your life.
Try it. Make a leap of faith. And see the results for yourself.
