Meditation for pain management - some tips
I have no experience with meditation for pain management except to say that a practiced
meditator would have developed the quality of equanimity in his mind. He would then be
able to manage the pain by suffering the discomfort without any feeling of aversion or
"this should not be happening to me." And the pain will pass. It must. It is in the nature of
all sensations to arise and pass away. Thus the practiced meditator would be able to use
the pain to develop spiritually.
The above is obviously easier said than done but anybody can determine to use the
painful sensations to further his spiritual progress. Eckhart Tolle describes how to deal
with the pain body in the modern spiritual classic – The Power of Now. He advises us
just t be present in the Here and Now, to surrender to the pain without conceptualization of
any kind. Just feel the sensation, surrender to it, and accept it as the will of God as it
were. This act of surrender is a powerful tonic, which will help us to develop spiritually.
Being present in the Here and Now is both the method and the goal of spiritual progress.
